Running
the London Marathon for the RNLI
|
The Mumbles Lifeboat crew
member Adam Bere is running the 2008 London Marathon in aid the RNLI,
all sponsorship will be gratefully received:
"This year I have
been given the chance to run the London Marathon on 13th April, and I
will be representing The Mumbles Lifeboat crew.
The RNLI is a registered charity which I have a close personal
connection with as I have been a crew member of The Mumbles Lifeboat
since 2002. As a charity the RNLI is run entirely on
contributions, and the large majority of the lifeboat crews are
voluntary (me included). Outside of my RNLI involvement, I use the
sea for various pursuits, including surfing and sailing, and to date I
haven't had to call upon the RNLI, thankfully. However, it is
comforting to know that throughout the year there is a fully trained and
dedicated crew close-by and on call day and night.
Each crew member gives a huge amount of personal time to become trained
to save lives at sea. The training required is to ensure that the
crews, who risk their own lives, are able to go to sea and return as
safely as possible. For that reason, I am running the London Marathon in
order to help raise money for the 'Train One Save Many' campaign which
is vital to turning volunteers into lifesavers.
Donating through the Justgiving site is simple, fast and totally
secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Through
this site the RNLI - Royal National Lifeboat Institution will receive
your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax
will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
So please sponsor me now on the link below!
Alternatively, if you would like to provide
cash or a cheque (cheques payable to 'RNLI'), please make for the
attention of 'Adam Bere - Marathon Sponsorship' and hand to a relevant
personnel at the Lifeboat station, or post to: The Mumbles Inshore
Lifeboat Station, Pier Road, Mumbles, Swansea.
Many thanks for your support."

Swansea Coastguards stated
that exercising in realistic conditions is part of the role as a
volunteer for the RNLI crew. This came very true for three Crew
Members based at Horton Lifeboat Station who were on exercise this
morning. Following a veering exercise, which all crews carry out
as a regular part of their competency based training, the inshore
lifeboat was hit by a particularly large wave in a 2 - 3 metre
swell. The ILB capsized throwing all three into the sea.
Following contact with Swansea Coastguard the RAF Rescue Helicopter
based at Chivenor, North Devon and both ALB and ILB at Mumbles were
tasked to attend the scene. The Sea King Helicopter winched all
three crew to the safety of the beach, while Mumbles ALB and ILB towed
the damaged Horton boat back to their Station. Fortunately all
crew were safe and did not require medical attention even though
conditions on the coast were poor with large swell and a South Westerly
wind force 5-6.
The incident has prompted an
investigation from West Mercia Divisional Base and has been reported by
the BBC.

Even 5 Months after the Annual
Mumbles Raft Race, held on 13th July 2003, donations and collections are
still being received by members of the Mumbles Crew. Swansea based Interserve
who entered the race this year donated a further £605 to the event,
which had been collected after the race. This brings their valued
contribution to over £1000, for which both Crew and the RNLI are
grateful. Norman Spring, Raft Race Treasurer, stated
"This has been the most successful Raft Race, in terms of
sponsorship and attendance, ever. We have now totalled in excess
of £13,000 for the charity during 2003."
