The ILB launched to assist with the recovery of an injured Atlantic Dolphin which had been found in the surf by 2 surfers at Langland Bay. When the ILB arrived the crew assisted 2 RSPCA inspectors who were in dry suits to keep the  dolphin afloat for some 45 minutes until the arrival of a vet.

Once the vet had donned a drysuit he went into the water and examined the dolphin. Then after discussing the dolphins condition with a specialist, it was decided that the kindest option was to bring the dolphin ashore and put it to sleep humainly.

This shout was featured in the front page of the Evening Post (20th November).

Both Mumbles ALB & ILB were requested to launch to a 21ft powerboat ‘Oliver’ hard aground on Crab Island, Langland Bay. Both Boats proceeded to the casualty with Mumbles ILB arriving on scene and evacuating 3 crew whilst leaving the skipper aboard. The casualties were landed ashore while the ALB stood by.  The skipper was then evacuated to ALB, and the ILB towed the casualty vessel off backwards with the incoming tide and handed the tow to ALB. Swansea Coastguard requested the ILB to proceed immediately to assist a number of windsurfers/canoeists, some 3 miles North of the ILB station, off Swansea.

The ILB crew had a rough crossing due to the conditions. When on scene, multiple persons were observed as in need of  assistance. Following an initial assessment, the ILB went to the 3 casualties nearest them (about 0.5 mile) off the beach. They were told to raft together and await rescue. The ILB then went out to the further group about a mile offshore, where another group were seen.

The ILB crew found 2 persons in the water who had come off windsurfers, hanging onto a double canoe with the 2 occupants. A small safety boat was present, but unable to take the persons ashore, due to the conditions and its size.

The ILB took these 4 persons into the ILB, then returned to the other 3 canoeists and returned all 7 persons ashore.

The ILB then went to a group of 6 persons who were rafted together and towed them ashore. The  ILB re launched to help recover the canoes and windsurfers that had been abandoned.

It transpires that the group were from a mixed party of 17 scouts from Twickenham in London. They had hired the craft on the beach, but unfortunately the conditions had got the better of them. 4 of the party had got ashore un aided. None of the party required any further medical assistance.

Following being released from the earlier service the ILB was tasked with attempting to save a seagull that was tangled in fishing line at the end of the pier. The request had come from the RSPCA who were unable to reach the bird due to its position.

The ILB went to see if it could assist the bird and found the bird being blown by the wind and tangled in the fishing line. The ILB was positioned by the pier, a line was attached to the pier. Then the crew were able to reach up and cut the line.

After a short time, the ILB crew recovered the ‘lively’ seagull from the sea and took it ashore. The seagull was then passed into the care of the RSPCA.

A short time later the ILB was then tasked to an immediate off Swansea – Details above.
