Bluff ( 1.25 miles west of the station). As D623 arrived on scene the
vessel "Lady Jay" had taken the 7 passengers onboard. D623
placed a tow on the Drake and towed her back to Mumbles. Whilst on route
the skipper of the Drake got the engine started, so the tow was dropped
and the ILB escorted the vessel back to Mumbles.
Meanwhile the
boarding boat was launched with Graham Wright and Richard Bowles
onboard, they transferred the 7 passengers from the Lady Jay ashore at

A Mumbles crew member noted heavy smoke coming from the engine compartment of the casualty vessel just after it launched. He though that the vessel had an engine fire so contacted D623 which was at sea on exercise and the
Coastguard, who requested D623 to attend the vessel. On arrival at the casualty vessel and upon further investigation it was noted that the smoke from the engine compartment was due to a defective broken exhaust manifold and not due to a fire. D623 was released by the Coastguard to
continue exercise.
