Whilst
the ALB was out on engine trials with a fleet mechanic the crew assisted
with the recovery of a young Jack Russell called "Jake". Jake
had been out on a walk with his owner when he fell over the cliffs at
"Thistle Bluff" a cove about 0.5 west of Limeslade. Jake fell
about 40ft on to rocks below and suffered various injuries.
Mumbles Coastguard Cliff team were tasked by Swansea Coastguard to
recover Jake. However with the ALB on hand, the X boat was used to allow
the Mechanic Steve Ace to row ashore. Steve then assisted members of the
cliff team to place Jake on a make-shift stretcher. Jake was carried
down to the X boat and transported out to the ALB, along with Martin
Collier of the cliff team. Once onboard the ALB she returned to the ALB
slipway at Mumbles, where Jake was landed ashore and reunited with his
owner. Mumbles Coastguard then transported Jake and his owner to the vet
for examination and treatment.

The casualty vessel had made an overnight passage from Padstow to Swansea. One crew member who suffered from Type 2
Diabetes had been violently sea sick overnight. When the yacht arrived in Swansea it was unable to lock into the marina due to a problem with the lock gates. Due to no other location being available to disembark the casualty the coastguard requested Mumbles ALB to launch and assist. The casualty was
transferred to the ALB in the River Tawe and brought back to Mumbles. He did not wish any further medical attention. |

Spoken word 'Mayday' heard by MRCC and others on CH16 Mumbles
aerial, with much background noise. A DF bearing gave a line from Hartland Point towards Swansea. The ALB was tasked and proceeded as did Appledore Lifeboat to search the Bristol channel. After approx 1 hour the Mayday caller repeated his transmission and said he was at Neath River area, therefore Mumbles ALB having searched 7miles south returned northwards some 10mile to search that area. Nothing was found and all units stood down at 14:30 and returned to station. The 'Mayday' was considered a hoax call. |

The casualty vessel, a 24ft
yacht was on passage from Portishead to Waterford, Ireland.
Condition in the Channel deteriorated and the skipper of the yacht
became ill with severe sickness and hypothermia. The two crew on
the casualty contacted Swansea Coastguards and informed them of their
situation. Swansea MCA advised the assistance of Mumbles All
Weather Lifeboat due to present sea conditions and inshore forecast for
the next 24 hours.
The crew launched with the
Honorary Medical Advisor Dr Julian Bell and located the casualty 11
miles south of Mumbles Head. A crew member and the Doctor were
transferred to the yacht in difficult sea conditions. The Crew
member took control of the yacht, whilst medical assistance was
administered to the skipper. Due to the poor sea conditions it was
agreed the safest return would be to allow the crew member to motor sail
the yacht back to Mumbles with the assistance of the ALB.
After 1 hour both boats
had returned to Swansea Bay, and were met by 2 inshore crew members
aboard the boarding boat, Assistance was provided to moor the
yacht on an RNLI buoy and then transfer the skipper to the awaiting
Ambulance. Conditions in the bay with ESE were rough, a cold front
had swept across the channel which dropped temperature by 5 Degrees and
snow conditions appeared. The inshore boat safely landed the
casualty and ALB crew on Knabb Rock slip.
